In November 1923, Hitler led around 2,000 men through Munich in an attempt to seize control of Bavaria and march on Berlin. The police opened fire; sixteen Nazis died; Hitler was arrested. Yet the trial that followed gave him a national platform - and prison gave him time to write Mein Kampf. The Munich Putsch failure turned out to be a strategic turning point.
