Henry III's reign was defined by conflict with his barons, the Barons' War, and Simon de Montfort's brief experiment with parliamentary government. His son Edward watched all of it and drew his conclusions. When Edward I came to the throne in 1272, he had a clearer idea of how to rule England - through law, statute, and controlled military force - than any English king before him.
