In medieval England, almost all formal education happened under Church supervision - in cathedral schools, monastery schools, and the two new universities at Oxford and Cambridge. The language of learning was Latin; literacy outside the clergy was rare. Yet this was also the age of Roger Bacon at Oxford, the Dominican scholars who dominated European thought, and the friars who brought religious teaching to urban populations who had never heard it before.
