What are you going to do next year? Are you fed up with hearing that question? Well, you could be asked it in your speaking exam! Or, you could hear young people discussing their plans in the listening exams, so you need to know this vocabulary! Here are some useful phrases to help you get started: Je travaillerai et je gagnerai de l'argent I will work and earn money Je resterai au collè ge I will stay at school Je voudrais faire... pour mon bac I would like to do A-Levels in... (name of subjects) Je continuerai mes é tudes à un autre collè ge I will carry on studying at another school J'é tudierai... I will study... (name of subject) Je voudrais devenir... I would like to be a... (name of job) All these phrases, except for the last one, are in the future tense. You use this tense to say what you are going to do tomorrow or next week. Not only may you be asked what you will be doing, you could also be asked what you would like to do. You used the future tense when saying what you will be doing. To say what you would do, you use the conditional tense. If you're O. K. on the future tense, then it's a piece of cake! Instead of saying " je... ai' you say " je... ais " For Example: I will stay = je resterai. I would stay = je resterais. Here are some phrases that may come in useful: Je gagnerais beaucoup d'argent I would earn lots of money Je travaillerais à l'é tranger I would work abroad Je trouverais un emploi inté ressant/varié I would find an interesting/varied job J'aurais de longues vacances I would have long holidays J'irais à l'université I would go to university Je travaillerais en plein air I would work in the open air Je travaillerais dans un bureau I would work in an office Je travaillerais avec des animaux I would work with animals Speaking You may be asked in your speaking exam about your future plans or about what career you would like to follow. Here are some examples of the types of questions you may meet, together with some ideas to start you off thinking about your own answers... Questions: 1. Qu'est-ce que tu feras l'anné e prochaine? 2. Quelles matiè res é tudieras-tu? 3. Qu'est-ce que tu voudrais devenir? Pourquoi? 4. Que font tes parents dans la vie? Comment trouvent-ils leurs emplois? 5. As-tu un petit emploi? Combien gagnes-tu? 6. Aimes-tu l'emploi? Pourquoi/pourquoi pas? Answers: 1. Je resterai l'anné e prochaine dans le lycé e. Or Je ferai un stage. Or Je voudrais continuer à un autre collè ge. Or Je travaillerai et gagnerai de l'argent. 2. Je ferai un baccalauré at en anglais, allemand, maths et chimie. Je voudrais é tudier l'allemand à l'université, parce que je voudrais travailler à l'é tranger. 3. Je voudrais devenir journaliste parce que j'aime travailler avec des gens. 4. Mon pè re est employé bancaire et travaille dans une grande banque au centre-ville. Il trouve le travail trè s inté ressant. Ma mè re est infirmiè re et travaille dans un hô pital. Elle trouve le travail è puisant. 5. Je suis serveuse et è puisant chaque samedi dans un restaurant. Je gagne trois livres par heure. 6. Le travail est ennuyeux et exerç ant. Je fais des é conomies pour les vacances. Je reç ois aussi dix livres par mois de mes parents. Je dé pense mon argent de poche pour des magazines. Careers could also come in a role-play situation. You may have to be interviewed for a summer job, in which case you would probably have to answer straight forward questions about your personal details and qualities.
